In the past two plus years since the death of my mother, there has been much soul-searching as well as numerous occasions in which the matter of my own faith has come to the fore. Those who have wrestled through sickness and the suffering of a loved one know full well that glib answers are of little comfort in the face of death. The Lord summons His people to the study of His character and nature as revealed to us formerly through the prophets to the fathers and now through the speaking of His Son (Heb 1:1-2). Happy 59th Birthday, Mom

My mother would have been 59 on March 1. Yet she never saw 57 due to her death from colon cancer. We watched as God gathered her home to Himself. We watched as six lengthy years of suffering and thousands upon thousands of prayers were answered, during which time we faced many crises of faith. There were numerous times of worship and adoration in the midst of pain. There were countless tears shed as the cancer progressed. There were numerous questions–questions that never got answered–questions that, in many ways, should not be answered. Are Humans Hardwired for Belief in God?

Is it true that “the heart of man is ever restless until it finds its repose in Thee,” as Augustine claimed in the early fifth century A.D.? It is true that anthropological studies have demonstrated that regardless of locale, be it in New York City or isolated peoples in the Amazon jungle, humanity is essentially religious. We will worship something. In a recent post, Dr. Al Mohler has an interesting discussion regarding this very question since it was raised in the New York Times Magazine.
