Tied to Cribs; Left to Die

19 11 2007

Prepared to be shocked at the piece from CNN that I have linked HERE. I heard about it in Dr. John Piper’s sermon from this past weekend. It is a brief expose of the less-than-humane-treatment of the disabled in Serbia. Government is not the answer, though one can hope that the recent exposure of these conditions will put international pressure on the Serbian government to make real changes. My hunch is, however, that we need not go all the way to Serbia to find such neglect. Boys and girls, men and women, tied to their beds and neglected, doing only one thing–awaiting death. I pray that God would provide them with the eternal peace and care that this world has not afforded them, and that the Church as a collective whole would act to controvert such injustice.

i didn’t watch…i can’t, or maybe won’t is a better phrasing…most of the time i would rather turn a blind eye, but thanks to you, faithful friend, for the reminder that there are so many in this world who need our Savior…both those who commit such atrocities and those who endure the torment…may we beg relentlessly on their behalf at the mercy seat

I watched about half of it. I couldn’t see much more of it through the tears. What sickens me the most is if that were a puppy kennel, it would be making the top news stories every night for a week. Had you not posted it here, I would probably have never heard about it. Thank you brother. I am now going to go and hug my kids even though they are sleeping.

Terry,
That’s a good point that I hadn’t thought of–if it were animals, PETA and other such organizations would have marched on the Serbian embassy (is there such a thing?). You get my point. It reminds me of the story this past spring concerning all of the babies being found in garbage bins in places like Germany and France, whereas a man in California was sentenced to 45 days in jail . . . for beating his dog.

PS-Raquel, always good to hear from you. Hug the Hoodlum for me.

Things like this video, as well as the EE-Taow video remind me of why I’m here at Boyce College; the people in this world need Jesus. How can I see those faces and think of giving up?
I’d just like to make a small plug for holt international. Holt is an international adoption agency which was started after a Christian couple from Oregon heard about orphans in need of homes in the aftermath of the Korean war. Holt isn’t in Serbia, although they are in other Eastern European countries, as well as Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The amazing and unique thing about Hold is that while children are waiting to be adopted the donations of sponsors allow them to live in foster homes and not institutions. Children with physical and mental special needs are served, cared for and hopefully adopted as well as those kids without any disability. In the event that special needs children cannot be adopted with the gifts of sponsors in some countries Holt takes care of those individuals in group homes for a lifetime where they recieve love, the message of Christ and all the human rights image bearers of God deserve.
I had a difficult time watching the clip, and I would encourage anyone else who does to look into any type or amount of Holt sponsorship gift to help meet the needs of people like the ones in the video in a practical way.
